A Different Kind Of Monster

Present Time

My vision blurred and spine tingled as a sudden cold crept down from the top. There was blood all over me. I tried to get up but my muscles wouldn't allow it. My right eye felt like it was being glued shut. There was blood gushing down from my eyebrow right into it and was already drying. I wiped my face with the forearm of my hoodie but ended up with a heavy streak of dust across my face.

My lungs suddenly began to ache. I had forgotten to breath from being in shock. As I gasped for air I looked around me. I had crashed into a small kiosk. Something moved behind the counter on my right. A small head peaked out. An old man was trembling in fear, mumbling under his breath. I tried to raise my hand to give him a reassuring gesture but my body simply resisted all of my commands. All I could do was breath. I helplessly looked at the man but he was no longer looking back at me. Something else had caught his attention. There was now another unwelcome guest in his store.

10 Minutes Earlier

The city was in lock down and but some of Arcadeus's men were still coming in. Now was the time to stand up to them. To show the humans that I am one of them... still am, and always will be. If they see a Demigod stand up to other Demigods then maybe they'll see that not all of us are bad. My target was only a few blocks away from me. There were people in the streets. The audience could help me spread my message. This was going to be perfect.

I glanced, rather shyly, from the corner of the building I was standing behind. I was in a narrow street in darkness. Day light couldn't enter this area no matter the angle. It was my safe spot for now. I checked myself out one last time. Sport shoes, jogging tights. a hoodie and bicycle gloves. I had outfitted myself in black to be one with the darkness and in the clothes I felt most comfortable in. This was going to be my first superhero moment. I had all sorts of emotions surging through my blood.

There was screaming. My target had attacked someone. Now was my time. I concentrated on my power, the ability to levitate objects. I walked to the middle of the street, imagining myself enter a world of cowboys. I blushed excitedly. I was the good guy!

"Hey you!" I shouted, trying to get the Demigod's attention. "Yeah you!" I continued after getting it. He simply looked at me. He was wearing some kind of grey military gear. The man suddenly started walking towards me and very fast. I hesitated. One part of my brain told me to attack, the other however was focusing on his attire. Holy shit I thought to myself. This guy wasn't just a random Demigod. He was one of those that had trained his powers and had entered the ranks of Arcadeus's army. The Demigod wasn't a civilian. He was a soldier.

My heart raced. I wasn't ready to face a soldier. I was only ready to face the Demigods who had no idea how to control their powers. The wanderers I called them but I no longer had time to think and talk to myself. The Demigod had covered half the distance between us. I immediately latched my powers on to a nearby car and launched it towards him.

The car whined as it hurled towards the now angry Demigod. My jaw dropped as he grabbed the car midair and dropped it beside him with ease without halting on his way towards me. In quick succession I launched several other objects at him but they all met the same fate. There was now a bunch of rubble in the street with an angry Demigod in the middle of it all. My powers were useless.

I wanted to run away but something stopped me. I promised myself to make a statement. I had to finish this no matter what. Standing my ground I waited for the Demigod to approach me. Maybe we could talk it out?

"No." He grunted as if he read my mind. In just a split second he twisted his body round with a readied his fist and smacked me, loudly, on the temple of my head.

Present Time

"Despicable performance." The Demigod  stood just outside the large windowpane I had crashed through. "I understand that you don't want to fight for us... but you can't even fight for them when you want to." he smirked, crossing his arms in a confident manner. "You're no good to anyone."

"We don't have to fight the humans! We are the humans!" I exclaimed. "My mother is human! My father, my brother! My family is human! I will do whatever to protect them!"

"I don't give a shit. You're going to die for crossing us. Arcadeus made it law. Anyone who is not with us is against us and he takes no prisoners."

"I'll fight you!"

"You already did." He jumped right in front of me and crouched, staring right into my eyes. "You could have been so much more. You could have learned your true potential."

"I know what I am capable of."

"Yes, failure it seems. Arcadeus could have taught you how to be a real Demigod. You're nothing. You disrespect the power within you."

"I fight for the people!"

"SHUT UP!" he roared and pointed at the kiosk owner. "This man hates you! This man despises you! He probably goes out hunting at night with a rifle he bought from a couple of days ago. He's probably done more against us than your little two minute stunt."

"He's an old man." I cried. I couldn't stop it. I was no older than nineteen. The Demigod was older and him just shouting was enough to scare me.

"But I can guarantee you he has children and grandchildren. I promise you that he'll fight for a better future for them. But guess what? So do I! I have a daughter of my own. She's no Demigod but I ain't giving her over to filthy humans. She's under my care and her daddy isn't going anywhere. I'm going to help rebuild this world."

"You're fighting for the wrong cause! We are all humans! You have to see that!" The tears didn't stop. My body was still unresponsive.

"Tell that to Tasia Mara. Oh no wait, you can't. Because the humans killed her! During a peace treaty she had organised!" The Demigod grabbed my throat with one hand and half of my face with the other. He began pushing my head towards the wall and choking me at the same time. I couldn't fight him. The Demigod turned my head to face the old man. "Once I kill you... I'm going to kill him... and then everyone else in this miserable place. You threw away what could have been a glorious life. You tried to act as a hero and made an unbeatable force the villain. So young and stupid. You could have been a God!" My skull fractured as he pushed harder. My vision blurred once more.

Before I lost all sight... and the rest of my senses... I saw the outline of the old man stand up with something in his hand... my sight ceased then... but I heard something deafeningly loud after that.

I just hope... I just hope I made a difference.
